And you’re the kinda guy who still has readers for them, and still knows there’s valuable data on those disks, but doesn’t have the time to back them up onto a real system… right?
Heh. That’s me! I actually picked up an old floppy drive last year for the purpose of migrating all the data from these disks (they belonged to my mom)… but haven’t had any time to do it yet.
That’s because despite the fact that you maybe have a few hundred megs worth of data on those floppies at most, it will take at best several hours of “ERRRNT ERRRNT uRRT ERRRNT WHIRRR ERRRNT CHUCKCHUCKCHUCK ERRRNT” &c. to copy them. Vs. the 10 seconds or so it would take that same amount of data from USB key to whatever.
It would be nice, but unfeasible, if someone had made a way to read a standard floppy faster with modern technology, but they’re so worthless as a storage medium now that it would be wastefully expensive. And it’s magnetic so you couldn’t just scan it with light :/
Exactly. Plus, the drive is being surprisingly obstinate (enabled in the BIOS, not detected in Windows… but heck, I might have the cable reversed because that was a notorious problem with these things…grrr).
I always kind of liked the sounds these drives made, but geez, I don’t miss them when it comes to storing stuff. It’s just about as bad as tape.
(It sure would be nice if there was a way to parallelize the retrieval of data from these disks…)
